A rose in every cheek: 100 years of Vegemite, the wartime spread that became an Aussie icon

Hannah Viney, Monash University

There are roughly 22 million jars of Vegemite manufactured in the original Melbourne factory every year. According to the Vegemite website, around 80% of Australian households have a jar in the cupboard.

The cultural status of Vegemite is so enduring that, in 2022, the City of Melbourne Council included the smell of the factory at 1 Vegemite Way, Fishermans Bend, in a statement of heritage significance.

Vegemite first hit Australian supermarket shelves in 1923, but it took a while to find its feet.

Indeed, the now classic spread may have failed into obscurity as “Parwill” if not for a very clever advertising campaign in the second world war.

A product of war

Vegemite has German U-boats to thank for its invention.

When the first world war began in 1914, Australians were big fans of Marmite, the British yeast extract spread.

As the Germans began sinking ships full of British supplies to Australia, Marmite disappeared from the shelves. Due to the conditions of its patent, Marmite could only be manufactured in Britain.

As a result, there was a gap in the market for a yeast spread.

Fred Walker, who produced canned foods, hired food technologist Cyril P. Callister to create a homegrown yeast spread using brewer’s yeast from the Carlton Brewery.

Callister’s experiments produced a thicker, stronger spread than the original Marmite. Callister’s inclusion of vegetable extracts to improve the flavour would give the spread its name, Vegemite, chosen by Walker’s daughter from competition entries.

Australians were wary of Vegemite when it first appeared on grocery shelves, perhaps due to brand loyalty to Marmite.

To try and combat this, Walker renamed Vegemite “Parwill” in 1928 as a play on Marmite: “if Ma might, Pa will”.

This rebrand was short-lived. Australians were not any more interested in Parwill than they were in Vegemite.

A nutritious food replacement

In the 1930s, Walker hired American advertiser J. Walter Thompson. Thompson began offering free samples of Vegemite with purchases of other Kraft-Walker products, including the popular Kraft cheese.

Kraft-Walker also ran limerick competitions to advertise Vegemite. Entrants would write the final line of a limerick to enter into the draw to win a brand new car.

It would take another world war, however, before Vegemite became part of Australian national identity.

The second world war also disrupted shipping supply routes. With other foodstuffs hard to come by, Vegemite was marketed as a nutritious replacement for many foods. One 1945 advertisement read: "If you are one of those who don’t need Vegemite medicinally, the thousands of invalids and babies are asking you to deny yourself of it for the time being."

With its long shelf life and high levels of B-vitamins, the Department of Supply also saw the advantages of Vegemite. The department began buying Vegemite in bulk and including it in ration kits sent to soldiers on the front lines.

Due to this demand, Kraft-Walker foods rationed the Vegemite available to civilians. Yet the brand increased advertisements. Consumers were told Vegemite was limited because it was in demand for Australian troops due to its incredible health benefits.

One ad told Australians: "In all operational areas where our men and those of our Allies are engaged, and in military hospitals, Vegemite is in great demand, because of its value in fighting Vitamin B deficiency diseases. That’s why the fighting forces have first call on all Vegemite produced. And that is why Vegemite is in short supply for civilian consumption. But it won’t always be that way. When the peace is won and our men come home, ample stocks of this extra tasty yeast extract will be available for everyone."

This clever advertising linked Vegemite with Australian nationalism. Though most could not buy the spread during the rationing years, the idea that Vegemite was vital for the armed forces cemented the idea that Vegemite was fundamentally Australian.

Buying Vegemite was an act of patriotism and a way to support Australian troops overseas.

Happy little Vegemites

In the postwar baby boom, Vegemite advertisements responded to concerns about the nation’s health and the need to rebuild a healthy population.

This emphasis on Vegemite as part of a healthy diet for growing children would remain the key advertising focus of the next 60 years.

The ear-catching jingle was composed in the early 1950s, first for radio and then later used in the 1959 television ad.

The link between Australian identity and Vegemite was popularised internationally by Men At Work’s 1981 song Down Under, with the lyrics “He just smiled and gave me a Vegemite sandwich”.

The 1980s also saw the first remake of the 1950s television campaign, re-colourising it for nostalgic young parents who had grown up with the original.

In February 2022, the first international arrivals welcomed back into Australia post-COVID were greeted with a DJ playing Down Under, koala plushies and jars of Vegemite.

On Vegemite’s centenary in 2023, the unassuming spread is now firmly cemented as an Australian cultural icon. Love it or hate it, Vegemite is here to stay. <!-- Below is The Conversation's page counter tag. “I didn’t have a voice”: Natt Barr's frank question for Candice Warner

Candice Warner has spoken candidly of her experience following her 2007 bathroom ‘scandal’ with rugby’s Sonny Bill Williams, revealing the real reason she kept her silence for so long.

It was during an interview on Sunrise with host Natalie Barr, where Candice was promoting her memoir Running Strong, that she faced another round of questioning over the 16-year-old incident. And it was one question in particular, from Natalie, that prompted the floodgates to open.

“Did you think about coming out straight away and talking more about it?” Natalie asked.

“This was 16 years ago,” Candice responded. “16 years ago, we lived in a society where we didn’t have the voice, women didn’t have the voice that we do now. I didn’t have the opportunity.

“Back then, I was forced to apologise for - I was single - for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Nowadays that just wouldn’t happen.

“I didn’t have a voice back then, now I do, and our society has changed.

“It still has a long way to go, but I feel like as a woman, I now have the confidence to be able to tell my side of the story and be heard.”

The former ironwoman - who now dedicates her time to her family and her career with Triple M radio and Fox Sports - went on to explain that the reason she hasn’t previously opened up was because of her three daughters with husband David Warner.

“In part it was for my three daughters,” she told Natalie, “who in time will be able to read the book, and I wanted them to get a better understanding of my story without any interference or judgement from outside.”

Candice has offered a similar explanation in the past, after confronting abuse at the cricket in 2022.

“A long time ago, when I was young, I got myself in a compromising position, which I regret,” she said during her appearance on SAS Australia.

“It had a huge impact on my family. Huge. It was just a personal situation. Too many drinks.

“Living with that and having to explain to my kids in the future is going to be very difficult. Especially when you’ve got three girls.

“I remember sitting on the side of the street and not being able to take it anymore.

“Yes, I’d made a mistake. But is that really worth, every single day, the media trying to drag me down? I don’t think so.

“It’s not something I am proud of but it’s something I can never take back.”

Images: Getty

Neighbours reveals which stars are moving back to Ramsay Street

New details have emerged over which Neighbours cast members will be returning to Ramsay St when the series launches on Amazon’s FreeVee late 2023.

The show - axed after 27 years on air - will benefit from the presence of a few fan favourite faces, with Annie Jones, Rebekah Elmaloglou, Georgie Stone, and Tim Kano reprising their roles as Jane Harries, Terese Willis, Mackenzie Hargreaves, and Leo Tanaka respectively.

And for those hoping to see Ramsay St’s iconic faces in the mix again, have no fear, Ian Smith will be returning at Harold Bishop. He will, however, only be returning as a guest, along with April Rose Pengilly (the actress behind Chloe Brennan), and Melissa Bell (Lucy Robinson).

The announcement is not the first to delight fans of the long-running soap, with the likes of Stefan Dennis (Paul Robinson), Jackie Woodburne (Susan Kennedy), Alan Fletcher (Karl Kennedy), and Ryan Moloney (Toadie Rebecchi) already having confirmed their commitment to the revival.

Georgie Stone took to Instagram to share the news of her return, along with a series of snaps with her fellow cast members.

“Ramsay Street here we come… (again!),” she captioned the image, noting her excitement and that fans should “stay tuned”.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Georgie Stone (@georgiestone)

Fans were thrilled with the news, and showered Georgie with their enthusiasm in the comments - a few, however, were miffed that they’d been through an entire finale only to have to pick it all back up again.

“Fantastic to see the familiar favourites all coming back!” gushed one fan. “Can't wait for Neighbours to start back again! Acclaimed actor David Warner dies at 80

David Warner, a famous British actor who acted in a range of different classics has died at 80 years old.

Warner's family said he died from a cancer-related illness on Sunday at Denville Hall, a retirement home for entertainers in London.

Often cast as a villain, Warner had roles in the 1971 psychological thriller Straw Dogs, the 1976 horror classic The Omen, the 1979 time-travel adventure Time After Time — he was Jack the Ripper — and the 1997 blockbuster Titanic, where he played the malicious valet Spicer Lovejoy.

Trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, Warner became a young star of the Royal Shakespeare Company, playing roles including King Henry VI and King Richard II. His 1965 performance in the title role of Hamlet for the company, directed by Peter Hall, was considered one of the finest of his generation.

Despite his success as a stage actor, chronic stage fright led Warner to prefer film and TV work for many years, seeing him nominated for a British Academy Film Award for the title role in Karel Reisz's Swinging London tragicomedy Morgan: A Suitable Case for Treatment, released in 1966. .

He had a prolific career on film and TV in both Britain and the United States, and became beloved of sci-fi fans for roles in Terry Gilliam's Time Bandits, computer movie Tron, Tim Burton's remake of Planet of the Apes, and the Star Trek franchise, where he made several appearances in different roles.

Warner returned to theatre in 2001 after almost three decades to play Andrew Undershaft in a Broadway revival of George Bernard Shaw's Major Barbara.

Warner's family said he would be remembered "as a kind-hearted, generous and compassionate man, partner and father whose legacy of extraordinary work has touched the lives of so many over the years."

"We are heartbroken," the family said.

They said Warner is survived by his partner Lisa Bowerman, his son Luke, daughter-in-law Sarah, "his good friend Jane Spencer Prior, his first wife Harriet Evans and his many gold dust friends".

Image: Getty

Podcast host Deborah James’ visit to the annual Chelsea Flower Show was made particularly special when she was able to see a rose that has been named after her.

James visited the show on Tuesday with her husband, where the couple were taken on an hour-long private tour and posed for photos alongside her namesake flower.

“Flowers are a reminder of our future,” James said, per the BBC. “We plant the seed not knowing what we might see grow.

“Being around nature gives us a lift and it is a reminder that life continues to blossom, even in some of the hardest places, and brings a smile to all of our faces, even in the hardest of times - particularly mine.”

James also shared the news with her fans on social media several days before her visit to Chelsea, admitting that she “actually cried” when Word of Roses and the Harkness Rose Company, which bred the rose, asked if they could name the flower after her.
<blockquote class="instagram-media" style="background: #FFF; Rundown Rose Bay mansion sells for 10,000 percent profit

A crumbling mansion last sold in 1974 has gone under the hammer, selling for a 10,000 percent profit.

Despite sorely needing a paint job, its dilapidated roof, and a lack of interior photos due to the state it was in, the property in Sydney’s Rose Bay was one of Sydney’s biggest auctions this year.

Its sky-high final price of $16.5 million can be attributed to its priceless 180-degree views of the city skyline, including the Harbour Bridge and Opera House.

The house was purchased by company director Norman Barrett in 1974 for $153,000, who died at 84, according to a death notice from last year.

The notice described him as the “loving father of Duncan and Amelia”, who he shared with the late actress Carmen Duncan.

Due to a caveat on the title, Duncan and Amelia stand to benefit from the property’s sale.

With nine registered parties and four competing in the sale, bidding opened at $12 million and jumped by increments of $100-200,000.

The new owner will build a new home on the 744 square-metre block to take advantage of the views, as reported by Realestate.com.au.

Images: Realestate.com.au

"As fake as they come": Oprah blasted by fellow Hollywood star

The talk show queen has come under fire by fellow Hollywood star, Rose McGowan, who claims her “fake” persona hides the “ugly truth”.

Oprah was well-known for her top-rating talk show but now she’s become famous for being able to get all the biggest names to talk to her about how they really feel – including Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

But now she’s being accused of faking her support of the #MeToo movement by activist and actress Rose McGowan.

Known for her roles in major movies and the TV series Charmed, McGowan posted a scathing tweet about the talk show queen, describing her as “as fake as they come”.

“I am glad more are seeing the ugly truth of @Oprah,” McGowan tweeted, along with an old photo of Winfrey, now 67, virtually kissing convicted rapist Harvey Weinstein.

“I wish she were real, but she isn’t.” tweets McGowan.

I am glad more are seeing the ugly truth of @Oprah. I wish she were real, but she isn’t. From being pals with Weinstein to abandoning & destroying Russell Simmon’s victims, she is about supporting a sick power structure for personal gain, she is as fake as they come. #lizard pic.twitter.com/RCuXNpWCU0
— Rose 🌊McGowan (@rosemcgowan) August 29, 2021

Herself an outspoken survivor of sexual assault, McGowan continues: “From being pals with Weinstein to abandoning & destroying Russell Simmon’s [sic] victims, she is about supporting a sick power structure for personal gain, she is as fake as they come. #lizard.”

Weinstein’s long list of alleged sexual assaults dating back to the 1970s was the catalyst for the #MeToo movement in October 2017, with McGowan being one of the first of dozens of women to accuse him of rape.

The disgraced film producer, who has denied having “any non-consensual sex,” was found guilty of two felonies in February 2020 and is currently serving time in Wende Correctional Facility.

Meanwhile, Russell Simmons has also been accused of rape and sexual misconduct by 20 women. The music executive, 63, has denied the accusations and kept a low profile in recent years, though he resurfaced in the Hamptons earlier this month.

McGowan’s tweet refers to an earlier documentary

It appears McGowan’s tweet refers to an earlier documentary which Oprah was going to be involved with. This 2020 documentary titled On The Record was centred around Simmons’ alleged sexual misconduct.

While she was originally on board to executive-produce the project, she ended up backing out, citing differences with the film’s directors.

In a statement, Winfrey said: “I have decided that I will no longer be executive producer on the untitled Kirby Dick and Amy Ziering documentary, and it will not air on Apple TV+,” Winfrey said in a statement to the Hollywood Reporter in January 2020.

“I want it to be known that I unequivocally believe and support the women. Their stories deserve to be told and heard. In my opinion, there is more work to be done on the film to illuminate the full scope of what the victims endured, and it has become clear that the filmmakers and I are not aligned in that creative vision.”

Not the first time McGowan has accused a celebrity of ‘faking’ it

This is not the first time McGowan has publicly accused a high-profile figure of faking their support of the #MeToo movement.

Last year, she hit out at her Charmed co-star Alyssa Milano, calling her a #MeToo “fraud”.

The ugly Twitter spat occurred when Milano expressed her support for then-Presidential candidate Joe Biden and the Democratic Party.

McGowan has long been opposed to Biden after claims he had sexually assaulted Tara Reade, leading her to label Milano a fraud and a liar.

Image: Twitter

Karl Stefanovic defends interview with anti-masker Lizzy Rose

Karl Stefanovic has defended the Today show’s choice to interview an anti-masker live on air.

Lizzy Rose, who was behind the infamous Bunnings video was invited on the morning show to spout her views, saying the coronavirus pandemic was “orchestrated” and “biochemically engineered”.

It didn’t take long for Stefanovic to abruptly end the interview, telling her: “You know, I can’t even listen to you anymore. Nup. It’s wrong.”

While some praised the host for cutting the woman off, others criticised him for inviting her in the first place.

@TheTodayShow I had to walk away while you gave that anti mask moron air time because people like that are dangerous and irresponsible. She didn’t and then I got a little bit sick of it and I said ‘that’s it’.”

Stefanovic said it was important to hear from people who held different views.

“I think having these people on is cool, we’re all about democracy and people having freedom of speech, but if you don’t have a good reason for doing it, then there’s no reason,” he said on KIIS FM.

The Today host admitted that he had been frustrated by footage of anti-maskers confronting authorities in Victoria as the state battles a second wave of coronavirus.

“It’s making me anxious looking at these people having a go at cops,” he said. “It’s enough!”

And that's good for them,” Nicole told You magazine earlier this year.

“It's given them a stronger understanding of what I do. It's made us all closer.”

Angry Birds 2 is Nicole’s little girls first major roles.

Kidman met musician Keith Urban in 2005 and they married the following year. In 2008, she gave birth to Sunday Rose and later in 2010 welcomed Faith Margaret via surrogacy.
